Battlestar Galactica is the story of human beings, perhaps of man who live on other worlds in deep space. The story begins the their machines called cylons launching a war and destroying the 12 colonies. The 12 colonies are the worlds on which humanity lives. Some 50,000 odd survivors gather in spacecraft and assemble into a fleet. The last warship, Battlestar Galactica under Commander Adama leads the fleet and is the only military presence and defence against the cylons.
Old legends from the origin world of Kobol speak of the 13th colony that inhabited a world called Earth instead of going to the 12 colonies with the rest of humanity. Galactica and her fleet decide to search for Earth, hopefully retracing the path of the 13th colony and wishing to find other humans and world on which to live.
The cylons have a surprise. Instead of just the "tin can" cylons the 12 colonies produced, there are now human looking cylons. These cylons are indistinguishable from men. Some of these cylons are among the fleet, either actively assisting the cylons or sleeper cells waiting to be activated.

Adama is the highest ranking military officer. Roslin is the highest surviving politician. She becomes president. Roslin has visioning of saving the fleet by finding Earth. She spearheads the voyage to Kobol, where human life began before founding the 12 colonies. The Lords of Kobol were the ancient masters of that world. Roslin goes so far as to send Starbuck back to Caprica looking an artifact called the Arrow Of Apollo. In a cliffhanger, season one ends with viper pilot Boomer activating as a sleeper cylon and shooting Adama on the bridge of the Galactica.
